Starting from 1st February, Roos van den Oetelaar, artistic and business director of Pop Up Cinema, will temporarily go on leave until summer.

During her absence, Merijn Bisschops, new to the team, will take on the business management. The artistic tasks will be taken over by Elke Bernards. We wish Roos a pleasant leave!

Merijn is a composer, video artist and photographer. With music and images as a basis, he consistently creates new combinations with other art disciplines such as dance and literature. He does not shy away from complex themes and navigates between the clichés and trends in contemporary composed music, video art and photography.

Since 2004, Merijn has been the artistic director of the Institute of Associations (IoA), through which he initiates his own productions. From 2006 to 2022, he alternately served as the artistic and business director of De Link, a concert organisation for new music in Tilburg. Until May, he will take on the business management of Pop Up Cinema.

Elke has been associated with Pop Up Cinema for almost four years. After her studies in Graphic Design at the St. Joost School of Art & Design, she became acquainted with cultural marketing through Maureen Prins. She started by supporting the activities of Pop Up Cinema and then further developed in this field.

Currently, Elke works as a marketer for the dance company de Stilte, Sounding Bodies and the city event Happy Bachdag. Additionally, she has supported various companies, creators and festivals over the past years. However, her great love remains film.

Until June, Elke will take on the artistic management of Pop Up Cinema.

Submit your work for the media art tour of LI-MA and Pop Up Cinema

LI-MA kicks off the new year with the continuation of LI-MA Presents: New Art On Screen and LI-MA Presents: Bring Your Own File: a nationwide initiative that brings groundbreaking media art to various places in the Netherlands.

The Amsterdam centre of expertise for media art aims to provide a platform for innovative works and new talent while promoting collaboration between artists, cultural organisations, and communities. In collaboration with Pop Up Cinema, this initiative will travel to Tilburg in February. We will be showcasing a selection from the LI-MA collection and new work by innovative creators for Bring Your Own File.

Are you a creator with recent and experimental video art in your portfolio, and do you see yourself in the following points? Then we are looking for you!

Your work is mainly produced in the Netherlands or Caribbean Netherlands, or you have Dutch nationality or a strong connection with the Netherlands;

The work was completed no more than 1 year ago;

The length of your work is no more than approximately 25 minutes;

Your work is experimental and innovative and addresses themes such as media critique and technology, gender and identity, sustainability or other local or emerging themes;

Or your work utilises new technologies and approaches.

The term of the current board is coming to an end. Therefore, from 2025 onwards, we are looking for a new head of the board and treasurer who, after a warm handover, will take over from the current board members. In the course of 2025 we would also like to welcome a new secretary. Do you have a great passion for film and the cultural sector and would you like to act as a sounding board for a committed film organisation from Tilburg? Then we are looking for you! 


Board
The foundation's board bears the ultimate responsibility for Pop Up Cinema and delegates the preparation and implementation of artistic and business policies to the artistic and business director of the foundation. The board oversees the director's policies, the achievement of the foundation's goals and activities, and the overall affairs of the foundation. The board responsibly fulfills its duties by adhering to relevant laws and regulations, the Governance Code for Culture, the Code for Cultural Diversity and Inclusion, and the Fair Practice Code. The board also acts as an advisor and sparring partner for the artistic and business director.


Head of the board
As head of the board, you coordinate the board's activities and guide the foundation. We are looking for someone who is involved, critically follows strategic and artistic decisions, and represents the foundation's interests with stakeholders such as funds, provinces, or municipalities. You are the first point of contact and sparring partner for the director, and together you prepare the board meetings. For this role, we seek someone with experience and/or knowledge of policy. Political sensitivity is a plus.


Treasurer
As treasurer of the board you oversee the finances, support the development of financial and business policies and advise the director where needed. You work with the director to keep the organisation financially healthy. The director is then responsible for drafting and implementing the foundation's financial policies and manages the budget and bank account. She also collaborates with an accountant.


Secretary
As secretary, you are responsible for taking notes during board meetings and creating meeting reports. You support the organisation, ensure smooth communication within the board, and keep important documents and information in a record.


The board meets four to five times a year. When circumstances require, some meetings may be held online. 

These roles are unpaid. However, a travel allowance is available.

Expertise in diversity and inclusion and board experience are a plus.

The start date for the head of the board and treasurer is January 2025. Secretary's start date is negotiable.

About Pop Up Cinema
Pop Up Cinema is a traveling cinema in Tilburg. We program throughout the year, bringing unique films to special places in and around the city. From (nature)theaters to thrift stores and from the harbor to the library. This way, we reach a diverse group of people.

In Pop Up Cinema's programming, audiovisual works serve as a starting point for reflection, dialogue, or debate. Through moving images, we relate to questions that are relevant to the world within and around us. Contextual programs, such as a mini-lecture, a performance, debate, interview, etc., often playfully introduce the feature film(s). Pop Up Cinema enjoys showcasing international productions but also frequently features works from regional and/or emerging talent.

Post Pop Up
Programming or curating involves making a meaningful filmselection based on factors such as current events, trends, or specific target audiences. It can bring together ideas, raise questions, or present different perspectives.

Pop Up Cinema aims to broaden its horizons and develop into an open platform for film, moving images and reflection in the coming years. We want to do this together with a broad pool of professionals who play a significant role in the ecosystem of film(screening) in the Netherlands, such as programmers, critics, journalists, or researchers. Or people who engage with film and moving images in other ways. In our Post Pop Up pilot, Pop Up Cinema invites three guest curators to develop a program line of three screenings on location in collaboration with our team.

Pop Up Cinema is seeking three guest programmers (x/v/m)

There are few people who don't love film. That's fortunate because films can seduce us into seeing and hearing things from different perspectives; they color our view of the world and influence how we experience it.

For Post Pop Up, we are looking for programming proposals that start from an interesting question, theme, or specific target audience for a three-part program. These proposals have a reflective character, have the potential to show or tell us something we don't yet know, and/or add something different to the discourse and offerings Pop Up Cinema currently provides. The program you will develop may have an experimental nature. Additionally, film can be broadly interpreted; we are interested in feature films, short films, documentaries, as well as audiovisual projects or (digital)media. Your selection for the trilogy always includes moving images.

Perhaps you are interested in presenting the work of a specific director or artist? Or how to reach a particular audience through film? Maybe you want to explore different perspectives on a societal theme in depth or tell or investigate something from a very personal standpoint with the program. The artistic and substantive interpretation is entirely up to you.

We consider several factors in the selection process:

-Pop Up Cinema is a traveling cinema. Have you considered a location and/or target audience?

-Feasibility of the plan in terms of production and cost.

-Does it add something to the existing (film)offer in the region?

-Polyphony and diversity. The aim is to develop three entirely distinctive projects from three different perspectives.

-We are not looking for fully developed plans with fixed titles.

Pop Up Cinema will work with you to determine the location(s) that fit the format and will produce the three evenings. You will be involved in the entire process, and we will publish a reflection on your program on our channels. This could be a text written by you, an interview, or another format that suits you. In addition to a fee of 1500 euros, you will receive a budget for licenses (film rights) and the compilation of a context program, allowing you to introduce a film, add a Q&A, or organize a debate, for example.

-This programming line is a special feature within Pop Up Cinema's regular programming. As a guest programmer, you have ownership of your program and are responsible for the process. Pop Up Cinema will function as a sparring partner and also assists with production and promotion of your events. Agreements will be documented in a collaboration agreement.

-Formally, you work on behalf of Pop Up Cinema.

-You will receive a fee of 1500 euros (including travel expenses, excluding VAT) for programming three screenings/events with accompanying sideprogramming. You will receive a total budget of 1000 euros for said sideprogram.

-The kickoff will take place at De Nieuwe Vorst Tilburg at the end of June 2024. The first programmer starts in October 2024. The second in January 2025. And the third in March 2025. We will determine the order together in the first meeting in June.

-During the program's duration, you are welcome to work at Pop Up Cinema's office in De Nieuwe Vorst in Tilburg. You decide when and if you want to make use of it. Editorial meetings are, however, held collectively and mandatory to attend.

-You are naturally at each event of your own events.


We welcome proposals of up to two pages. Additionally, please include a concise biography and resume. The deadline for submitting your proposal is Friday, May 31st at 10:00 am. We may call you the following week if we have any further questions. The selection will be announced on June 7.

Pop Up Cinema is seeking three guest programmers (x/v/m).

For the last three Fridays of August and the first Friday of September, Pop Up Cinema will once again transform the courtyard of Theater De Nieuwe Vorst into a pop-up outdoor cinema.

Last year, these evenings were programmed with a new twist: we screened a short film by a young filmmaker as an appetizer. We asked these young directors: which feature film would you program alongside your work and why?

We're doing the same thing this summer. We are teaming up with young talent to curate the perfect lineup for four evenings of film in August and September. Have you made a short film of up to 20 minutes and want to reach a broad audience? Then we're looking for you.

The selected filmmaker will have the opportunity to present their work as a preview for the evening's feature film. Not only that, we will also brainstorm together about which feature film complements the short. What is a relevant theme in your film? Which director or genre inspired you? Which film resonates with your work? Or is there a film that everyone should see for another reason?

Your film should be a maximum of 20 minutes long

You should have a good idea for a theme or genre for the evening/the films. The selection will be based on your work and vision. We will then program the main full-length film together.

You will receive a fee of €150 for the screening of your film and your contribution to the program.

The screenings will take place on the last three Fridays of August and the first Friday of September at Theater De Nieuwe Vorst in Tilburg.

You must be present on the day of the event.

We look back on a wonderful sold-out autumn evening in the Nachtzuster where performance band LaPiratesse warmed up the room with a live performance before a screening of the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream.

Inez Wolters brought a set filled with striking, often Dutch, lyrics to the Nachtzuster. She switched to a completely new look between each song, with an entire wardrobe of costumes thoughtfully laid out on stage.

After the performance and a short breather, the Nachtzuster transformed into a cinema for Moonage Daydream: an experimental David Bowie documentary full of bombastic sound and spectacular archive material. That Friday we plunged into the world of one of the most iconic world-famous rock stars of all time.  

Film connects effortlessly with many other art disciplines. This was the last collaboration between Pop Up Cinema and the Nachtzuster in 2023 after a series of screenings in which film and other art forms merged effortlessly.

De Vormforensen is an Arnhem-based graphic design agency founded by Anne-Marie Geurink and Annelou van Griensven. De Vormforensen specializes in visualizing social impact for companies that dare to change perspective. They work for clients who see the importance of sustainability, social impact or equality. Pop Up Cinema asked the studio to renew our visiual identity and website to better reflect who we are. The Vormforensen talk about how they approached this.



Movement and light
Pop up Cinema's new identity is based on the natural movement of light. This nomadic film house originated from Solar Cinema ten years ago, in which solar energy was essential. Not to mention that film does not exist without a light source. One of the important references that inspired us was pin hole photography. A form of photography in which the movement of the sun is essential. The new visual identity is built from the color spectrum of day and night. Programmer and designer Janine Zielman built a website in which the position of the sun is visible connected to the time and dates of our events. This makes the website dynamic and connected to the position of the sun in various ways.

Website as a tool
The website is built as a generator in which we generate color and shape based on date and time. This makes the live position of the sun visible on various pages of the website. The website is a tool for generating images for all our expressions. The color combinations and moment of the sun ensure that the course of the seasons becomes visible when you browse through our events. 

On the longest day of the year, June 21, we launch our brand new corporate identity and website. The Vormforensen take us along in the design.

Dynamic logo
The horizontal lines on the website, but also in the logo, refer to the horizon and the rising and setting sun. The logo has become as dynamic as our programming. Pop up Cinema works together with various partners with whom we organize film screenings. This has now been made more visible.

Green hosting
As a design studio, De Vormforensen stands for sustainability and social impact. They chose green and sustainable parties to host the website and send out the newsletter. The website is built with a block system that limits amounts of data processed and used to what you only really use and need.

The zomerfilms in theatre de Nieuwe Vorst are a popular event in Tilburg. Every summer we screen movies in the open air in the garden of the theatre all for free. This year we want to use this event to give local filmmakers a voice and a chance to reach a large new audience.

De zomerfilms in theater de Nieuwe Vorst zijn inmiddels een begrip in Tilburg. Elke zomer tonen we in de binnentuin van het theater helemaal gratis films in de buitenlucht. Dit jaar zien wij de zomerfilms als kans om lokale makers een stem te geven en een groter publiek kennis te laten maken met hun werk.

Open call: filmmakers with own work wanted  

We are looking for short film makers who would like to present their own work at the zomerfilms as an amuse-bouche for the main film of the evening. Not only that, we'll also work together to pick a feature film to be screened together with your short that connects to your work. On the evening itself, the maker will introduce the pre-film and the main film, with the link between the two films as a common thread for the conversation of the evening. We're back in the office spaces of the monumental building of theatre The Nieuwe Vorst, just like before when Maureen Prins was still running Pop Up from this exact same location as our business and artistic director. From now on, our current team of three will regularly be found on the first floor of Willem II Street 49, 5038 BD Tilburg.
