In the fall of 2024, it will be exactly 15 years since the Dutch-Serbian choreographer Jelena Kostić founded her own dance company. Based in Tilburg, Kostić has become a choreographer of national significance with her accessible, engaging, and physically challenging style. This milestone deserves to be celebrated with a special program in Tilburg.

On December 12, dive into an entire afternoon focused on effectively filming dance and creating an immersive dance film with the Dance and Film workshop on Thursday, December 12.

In this program by Jelena Kostić and Nicola Hepp, you will gain insight into essential techniques for filming dance, from choosing the best angles to conveying rhythm and emotion through cinematic storytelling.

The workshop consists of two separate parts: first, we will present a CineSandwich with Jelena Kostić, and after a break, Nicola Hepp will lead practical exercises with the participants. After a dinner with soup and bread, we will conclude the day with a dance film at Cinecitta.

During the CineSandwich, we will present the film Your Approval is Not Essential by filmmaker and choreographer Jelena Kostić. Moderator Meike van Zandvoort will engage in an in-depth conversation with Jelena about her work, after which we will watch the footage again with a fresh perspective.

The newly gained insights into the creative process will alter the viewing experience and reveal new layers in the work. By going through the film step by step and weighing each choice, we will learn more about the story behind the images, leading to a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking.

The digital and media art platform LI-MA is coming to Tilburg with its media art tour, LI-MA Presents: New Art on Screen. Together with LI-MA, we invite you to a special film evening with discussions with the creators, featuring works by Bea de Visser, Katja Verheul, Daniel Jacoby, and Broersen & Lukács.

Dive into a selection of stimulating works that explore themes of memory, identity, and the intersection of personal and collective histories. The films delve into the legacy of violence, the relationship between humans and nature, and the reinvention of cultural narratives. Expect an evening full of media art that challenges, reflects, and invites new interpretations of familiar stories.

Filmmakers Daniel Jacoby, Katja Verheul, and Bea de Visser will be present to discuss their work in conversation with LI-MA curator Sanneke Huisman.

This event marks the first curatorial collaboration between LI-MA and Pop Up Cinema.

A sequence of family anecdotes and historical events coinciding with the artist's date of birth takes on a darker tone as he unearths what happened in his native Peru on that day in 1989. Through the lens of a vastly neglected anti-LGBT hate crime, a new narrative emerges from familiar memories.

Daniel Jacoby is a visual artist and filmmaker. His work often gravitates towards eccentric characters, places, and stories, which he approaches from inventive and tangential perspectives. Using abstraction as a recurring element, his practice explores themes such as outsiderness, belonging, loneliness, friendship, desire, and spirituality.

The viewer is drawn into a dilapidated glasshouse, a space where nature is traditionally tamed and studied. A ghostly figure dances to a variation of the iconic song from Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967). As the music fades, the vocal group Black Harmony reinterprets the song in their own language. I Wan’na Be Like You deconstructs and reconstructs the novel, film, song, and their cultural legacies.

Broersen & Lukács live and work in Amsterdam. The artist duo creates works across media—including video, animation, and graphics—that examine contemporary visual culture’s ornamental and constructed nature. Their video pieces, blending filmed footage, digital animation, and media imagery, explore the ways in which reality, mass media, and fiction are deeply intertwined.

I Wan’na Be Like You – Broersen & Lukács, 2024, 14 min 22 (In collection: LI-MA)

A few times a year, the sky in France turns red as sand from the Sahara is carried across Southern Europe by changes in air pressure. This dust, containing cesium-137 from French nuclear tests in Algeria, settles over everything—a time capsule of war's invisible consequences. Red Dust examines what is remembered and what is buried under the sands of time through the perspectives of a French veteran and archaeology students.

Katja Verheul is a filmmaker and artistic archaeologist based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She holds a BFA in Audio-Visual Arts from Gerrit Rietveld Academie (2012) and an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University (2016). Her films aim to visualise complex social, political, and economic issues through long-term research. Often exploring the remnants of war, her work investigates their impact on both people and nature.

In No Horses on Mars, the viewer experiences the journey of a horse—from a trailer ride on the highway to waking up in a veterinary clinic. Blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, the film shifts to the horse’s perspective, offering a poignant exploration of the relationship between humans and animals. The horse is measured, recorded, and objectified, yet the film ultimately reveals a glimmer of recognition for the animal’s individuality.

Bea de Visser is a visual artist, director, and script writer based in Dordrecht, Netherlands. Alongside her artistic practice, she is a producer and consultant for Anotherfilm and advises on corporate collections. She lectures on narrative techniques, concept development, and cinematography at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht and mentors students in the Master Scenography programme.

(null) is an audiovisual exploration of existential anxiety and the fractured identity of the digital age. Composed entirely of digital material—including screenshots, screen recordings, QR codes, memes, and GIFs—the work navigates the tension between digital nihilism and post-ironic self-mythologisation, reflecting on the paradox of searching for meaning in an oversaturated online world. 

Lilian C. Scheuer is a multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer based in Germany. Her work investigates the psychological conditions of human nature in relation to the post-digital age, spanning audiovisual works, printed matter, and installations. She employs digital aesthetics and internet iconography to explore the dual existence of modern society—simultaneously physical and virtual. 

Inspired by Oskar Fischinger’s 1920s wax experiments, States of Matter is an experimental strata-cut animation crafted from wax and paper. Solid sculptures are shaped from liquid wax, only to be systematically sliced apart and reanimated, creating mesmerising macro animations. The tactile soundscape accentuates the textures and movements of the materials, immersing the viewer in their transformation. 

Marvin Hauck is an experimental animator. Influenced by his studies in creative media in Hong Kong, he later pursued a master’s degree in animation in the Netherlands, focusing on expanding the field of strata-cut animation. His practice builds on historical techniques while exploring new material possibilities in moving image. 

QUEER TEARS visualises the disconnect between internal queer experience and external societal perception. Through costume and abstraction, the film constructs a world where alienation and monstrosity take centre stage—transforming pain and exclusion into symbols of joy and self-acceptance. 

Sophie Waller is a British-American interdisciplinary artist and performer based in the Netherlands. Working across performance, video, and digital media, she explores physical expression, queerness, and abstraction. Her practice embraces experimentation and non-traditional methodologies, using play and intuition to challenge normative structures and perceptions. 

Chemical Affinities traces the ecological and territorial impact of ammonia fertilisers in Portugal’s Alentejo region. The work juxtaposes high-resolution images of agricultural landscapes with granular Super 8 footage toned using ammonia-based processes, questioning the role of chemicals in shaping growth, industry, and visual culture. 

Miguel Teodoro is a visual artist and researcher working between Portugal and the Netherlands. His practice examines materiality, geopolitics, and ecology through site-responsive and media-specific interventions. Holding an MA in Geo-Design from Design Academy Eindhoven, he investigates the techno-scientific transformation of landscapes and its historical entanglements with imaging technologies.

Nesie Junyi Wang (she/her), In the Trace of Tilled Stones, 2024, 20’

At a copper mine in China, decades of extraction have left the land infertile and toxic. Yet, despite these conditions, mine workers have created small gardens in the very soil altered by industrial processes. This film interweaves their stories, revealing the complex relationship between the workers and the landscape they both degrade and nurture.

Nesie Junyi Wang is an artist and researcher working across printmaking, photography, and film. Her practice explores human interactions with their environments, focusing on relational dynamics, paradoxical connections, and transformations within ecological and cultural contexts.

On Friday, 14th March 2025, the Werkwarenhuis in Den Bosch will be transformed into a cinema and theatre for the third edition of the CineMachine Festival. CineMachine takes you on a journey into the ‘Engine Room’ of film with screenings, music, performances, creators, and more.

In August, Pop Up Cinema returns with open-air film screenings in the garden of Theater De Nieuwe Vorst! Enjoy a unique film program under the stars. We'll be showing a short film by a young filmmaker as an appetizer before the main feature. We ask this young director: Which main film would you choose to accompany your own work, and why? 

The film program starts around 9:00 PM, as soon as it gets dark. But you're welcome to come by earlier for drinks. In case of bad weather, we'll move into the main auditorium, so the screenings will always go ahead.

In August we’ll once again screen films in the garden of Theater De Nieuwe Vorst for our Zomerfilms! Enjoy a unique open-air film program. The main film will be preceded by a short film from a young director. We asked this young director: Which main film would you program alongside your own work, and why?

On Thursday the 14th of August we invite Sibrich Wijnia to present her short documentary Wie luistert er naar de Hûnekop, followed by the comic and musical Kneecap from director Rich Peppiatt. The true story of a trio of eccentric Northern Irish rappers.

We’ll start the film as soon as it gets dark, around 9:00 pm. Of course, you’re welcome to come and have a drink beforehand. If the weather’s bad, we’ll move to the main hall of the theatre. The summer films are a pay what you want event.

Warning for non English speakers: the short film is in Dutch and will not have English subtitles.

Kneecap chronicles the explosive rise of Northern Irish rap group Kneecap, consisting of members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, who play themselves in this gritty and energetic biopic. What starts as frustration about oppression, injustice and cultural erasure grows into a left-wing, radical musical uprising. Their style is confrontational and funny, and fully bilingual: Irish and English. A political choice and a cultural statement.

The film is set in Belfast, where the scars of the conflict between Catholic Ireland and predominantly Protestant England are still very much felt. Kneecap use humour as a weapon, music as a form of resistance, and proudly embrace their heritage. 

The film premiered at Sundance, where it immediately received the Audience Award. Director Rich Peppiatt blends documentary-like rawness with playful fiction and punk energy. Kneecap themselves recently made headlines for their outspoken pro-Palestinian statements: at the Coachella festival the trio spoke out against Israel, after which their American visas were revoked.

At Best Kept Secret in Hilvarenbeek this month, Kneecap was moved to the main stage at the last minute. Not just because of their popularity, but also to give their activist voice space as a counterpoint to war and oppression.

During a party deep in the Frisian woods, we meet the rock band the Hûnekop in this short documentary by maker Sibrich Wijnia. These down-to-earth guys are known for their rough image and music revolving around Frisian identity. Over the course of the evening, we get to know the band and learn what makes their music so special to their fans. 

Sibrich Wijnia is a Frisian filmmaker and producer from Rotterdam. In her work she explores cultural identity, connection and history, often from a personal or regional perspective. Her film fits seamlessly alongside the main feature Kneecap, where music, language and heritage also serve as sources of resistance and connection.

How does sound tell a story? In the three-part film series ‘Around Sound’, three films are at the centre in which sound, rather than image, is the leading narrative. What if sound doesn’t serve the visual, but instead takes the lead in telling a cinematic story?

Optics are everything could be considered the motto of our contemporary culture. Whether something is real or sincere hardly seems to matter anymore, as long as the image is right. The regime of visual language is so dominant that our eyes seem to have become our primary senses. But in the battle for our attention through visual overstimulation, we forget an important source for storytelling: sound. 

These screenings focus on providing an optimal sound experience, which is why they take place in Volver Studio near Ringbaan Noord. Balloons will be available for the audience who want to feel the film’s soundtrack. All three films will be briefly introduced by curator Anneroos Goosen and opened with a short sound film by Het Concreet. Afterwards, a tape piece by Het Concreet can be listened to in the control room of the sound studio. This edition we'll screen a short opening movie by Het Concreet X Krishna Sutedja & Vivi Pitriana.

Het Concreet is a sound collective based in Tilburg, dedicated to experimenting with analogue sound techniques and working with tape. From their studio on the Ringbaan-Oost, founders Mathijs Leeuwis, Mathijn den Duijf and Anneroos Goosen collaborate with a wide range of makers to explore the many forms of sound in its physical shape.

On 23 April 2005, seventeen synchronised cameras were set up along the pitch where Real Madrid and Villarreal were playing. Visual artist Douglas Gordon had all the cameras focus exclusively on the French star player Zinedine Zidane, and asked Mogwai to create the soundtrack for this real-time football match, which is so much more than just a football match.

The deaf filmmaker Alison O’Daniel came across a news story about the unsolved theft of tubas from several high schools in Los Angeles. This became the starting point for a visual poem on how people across the spectrum of deafness experience sound. The Tuba Thieves is not a story about thieves or missing tubas, but asks what it means to listen. 

Around Sound is part of a special programme called Post Pop Up. Three innovative voices have curated, on behalf of Pop Up Cinema, a series of three unique film screenings at special locations, each based on distinctive themes. This is the final triptych in the series, curated by Anneroos Goosen from Het Concreet.

At the Pasvik Folk High School, 200 miles above the Arctic Circle, a group of teenagers choose an unconventional gap year: no classroom lessons or screens, but dog sledding, surviving in the Arctic wilderness and learning to rely on each other – and on a loyal pack of Alaskan huskies. In the magical Folktales we follow three of these youngsters, each seeking a fresh start here.

Take Norwegian Hege, for example, who after the loss of her father hopes the wilderness will give her direction again. Bjørn Tore, too, is tired of being an outsider and unexpectedly finds a companion here in Romain from Groningen, who wants to overcome his social anxiety. Together, they embark on a journey of self-discovery in the biting cold.

DAISIES (Věra Chytilová, 1966) - 4K Restoration Re-release Trailer

Daisies is an explosion of color, collage and chaos. The film refuses to behave: scenes leap from one style to another, colors shift without warning, logic gives way to play. Everything feels like it could fall apart at any moment, and that's exactly where its power lies. The film centers on two young women who decide that if the world is corrupt, absurd and hypocritical, they will exaggerate that logic and bounce it right back at society. 

In a world that presents itself as orderly and moral, but is in reality defined by power structures, consumerism and social control, they answer absurdity with even more absurdity. In Daisies, form and content are inseparable. The film doesn't just tell a story about rebellion; it rebels itself. Against narrative rules, against good taste, against authority, and against the idea that art has to behave. Every cut, color shift and visual joke feels like a small act of disobedience. 

More than fifty years on, Daisies still feels surprisingly fresh. Not because the film provides answers, but because it keeps challenging us: what happens when you refuse to accept the world as it is? And how can playfulness become a political act?

This film screening is part of a series of three screenings for the 2026 edition of the Murf/Murw festival. Murf/Murw was founded in 2018 as a fanzine. Since 2020, they've organized an annual festival in the city center of Tilburg focused on experimental theatre, music, visual art and film. Each year with a new theme. This year's theme, or rather the good advice, is don't be evil. 

The films are screened at a special location, the national heritage site Broekhovense church, a church building in Tilburg located at Broekhovenseweg 2.

La Casa Lobo - The Wolf House - OFFICIAL TRAILER

La Casa Lobo (The Wolf House) tells the story of Maria. After escaping a religious colony in Chile, Maria seeks shelter in a country house, where she's taken in by two pigs, the house's only inhabitants. As if in a stop-motion dream, the world of the house responds to her emotions. The animals slowly turn into humans, and the house transforms into a dark, menacing world. 

Surreal and unsettling: an ex-/implosion of inimitable creativity that pushes the boundaries of what's possible with stop-motion. Like a dark, rippling river of papier-mâché, cardboard, paint and all manner of other materials, this nightmare pulls you into a suffocating, dark, yet also strikingly beautiful den.
