Inland Empire is a 2006 experimental psychological thriller and art film by director David Lynch. The film follows Hollywood actress Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) as she becomes increasingly entangled in a dark, surreal, and fragmented narrative surrounding a cursed film production, blurring the lines between her own identity and that of her character.
The light of Los Angeles. A fever dream. Camcorders. A puzzle without an edge. Realising your dreams is the most wonderful thing there is. The perfect song, at exactly the right moment. An open wound. Auditions. A laugh that lingers just a bit too long. Hollywood. Reality as a set. The dream as truth.
This year, David Lynch passed away, one of the greatest artists of all time. While many cinemas have shown a retrospective of his work, Inland Empire has often been skipped. Probably because it is his most radical, experimental, expressive, and also personal film.
Let's not be silent for 2 minutes, but 3 hours, to honour this great artist.
