Dance and film // Your Approval is Not Essential

In the fall of 2024, it will be exactly 15 years since the Dutch-Serbian choreographer Jelena Kostić founded her own dance company. Based in Tilburg, Kostić has become a choreographer of national significance with her accessible, engaging, and physically challenging style. This milestone deserves to be celebrated with a special program in Tilburg.

On December 12, dive into an entire afternoon focused on effectively filming dance and creating an immersive dance film with the Dance and Film workshop on Thursday, December 12.

In this program by Jelena Kostić and Nicola Hepp, you will gain insight into essential techniques for filming dance, from choosing the best angles to conveying rhythm and emotion through cinematic storytelling.

The workshop consists of two separate parts: first, we will present a CineSandwich with Jelena Kostić, and after a break, Nicola Hepp will lead practical exercises with the participants. After a dinner with soup and bread, we will conclude the day with a dance film at Cinecitta.

During the CineSandwich, we will present the film Your Approval is Not Essential by filmmaker and choreographer Jelena Kostić. Moderator Meike van Zandvoort will engage in an in-depth conversation with Jelena about her work, after which we will watch the footage again with a fresh perspective.

The newly gained insights into the creative process will alter the viewing experience and reveal new layers in the work. By going through the film step by step and weighing each choice, we will learn more about the story behind the images, leading to a deeper appreciation for the art of filmmaking.
